Kennedy Center President Leads Symposium for Cultural Institutions at Mishkenot Sha’ananim, Jerusalem (May 18-19, 2009)
The Office of Public Diplomacy at the U.S. Embassy supported and facilitated a two-day Arts Management symposium led by Michael Kaiser, President of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C.  Michael Kaiser’s uncanny ability to key into pivotal arts management issues with clarity and to provide personal attention to each participant was captivating.  He guided participants through virtually all aspects of arts management -- from identifying difficulties, artistic planning, programmatic and institutional marketing to fundraising and outreach.  The 120 participants from theater, dance, museums, film and music institutions, foundations and government cultural departments were fascinated and kept voicing their appreciation for this unique opportunity to learn from this international expert.  Comments from many of the participants were “I have learned so much,” “This has totally changed my thinking,” “and I already have ideas on how to implement some of the steps.”  The appreciation and gratitude from all the participants was unanimous.  The Office of Public Diplomacy partnered with the Arts Department, Division of Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Israel’s Cultural Institutions Forum; and Mishkenot Sha’ananim, an international cultural and conference center, in supporting this unique and enlightening symposium. However, it was clearly the generosity of Michael Kaiser and the Kennedy Center that made this program so inspiring.
