Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to renew or apply for a new U.S. passport at the U.S. Embassy in Tel- Aviv?

  • The process takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks. The turn around time may be extended to a month or longer during periods of high demand.

Is it necessary to make an appointment to receive services from the American Citizen Services Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv?

  • Yes! You must have an appointment to receive services from the American Citizen Services Unit. Individuals seeking certain services do not need to make appointments. Please click on the Appointments for more information about who needs an appointment and how to schedule it.

Can I renew my passport before it expires?

  • Yes.  You may renew your passport at any time that is convenient for you.  Please ensure that you have enough time to receive your new passport before your need to travel.

Does my passport need to be valid for 6 months or a year in order to travel?

  • Your passport may be used for travel to and from the United States within the validity date displayed on the passport.  Certain countries that issue visas before entry may require U.S. citizens to present a passport that will remain valid for the time they will be present in that country.  This is so that the passport is valid for the length of the visa.  In addition, most countries that do not require U.S. passport holders to have visas prior to entry do require at least 6 months’ passport validity. You may contact the Department of State’s website listing of Consular Information Sheets to find out each country’s entry requirements.

How do I receive my newly issued passport if I apply at the Embassy?

  • You may supply a registered, self-addressed, envelope stamped with at least 10 NIS in postage.  Alternatively we can have your passport(s) delivered by postal courier service for a fee of 34 NIS, accommodating up to 8 passports in one envelope.   At the Embassy you must complete a courier envelope and you will receive a slip displaying your delivery tracking number. Once you have left the Embassy, the courier service will contact you by telephone to collect payment by credit card.  The courier service will identify themselves with the tracking number you are given.
