US Passport by Mail

Note:  Please enter your Social Security Number in the correct field on your passport application.

Most adult US passport renewals can be done by mail or drop off without the personal appearance of the applicant at the Embassy.   

You  can use our APPLICATION FOR US PASSPORT BY MAIL DS-82  service if all of the following are true in your case: 

  • I can submit my most recent, undamaged passport AND
  • I was at least 16 years old when my most recent passport was issued AND
  • I was issued my most recent passport in the last 15 years AND
  • I use the same name as on my most recent passport or since my passport was issued, OR I have had my named changed by marriage or court order and can submit proper original documentation to reflect my name-change

If you answered NO to any of the 4 statements above STOP!  You cannot use Form DS-82! You must apply in person.

What to send in with the completed and signed application form:
 

- Your most recent U.S. passport book and/or U.S. passport card
- $75 Fee (PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH)
- Two recent, full face, color photographs taken against a white background.  
- Self addressed-postage paid return envelope
- A marriage certificate or court order (if your name has changed)

Send in your most recent qualifying passport:  Send your most recent qualifying US Passport with your application. 

Send in the Passport Fee:   The cost is US $75, payable, if by mail, only by Bank Check in US Dollars for the exact amount payable to:  US EMBASSY TEL AVIV.  We regret we cannot receive checks in NIS or personal checks. Please do not send cash.


If you chose to drop off your application, the fee may be paid in cash in US$ or NIS or by most international credit cards.   

Photographs:  Passport photographers near the Embassy are at Bograchov 9 and Ben Yehuda 36.  Any photographer who can produce photographs according to the following standard is acceptable.    

TWO RECENT, COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS. Submit two color photographs of you alone, sufficiently recent to be a good likeness of you (normally taken within the last six months), and 2x2 inches in size. The image size measured from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head (including hair) should not be less than 1 inch and not more than 1 3/8 inches. The photographs must be color, clear, with a full front view of your face, and printed on thin paper with plain light (white or off–white) background. Photographs must be taken in normal street attire, without a hat, head covering, or dark glasses unless a signed statement is submitted by the applicant verifying the item is worn daily for religious purposes or a signed doctor’s statement is submitted verifying the item is used daily for medical purposes. Photographs retouched so that your appearance is changed are unacceptable. Snapshots, most vending machine prints, and magazine or full–length photographs are unacceptable. Digitized photos must meet the previously stated qualifications and will be accepted for use at the discretion of Passport Services.

Provide a stamped self-addressed return envelope for the return of the newly issued passport and the cancelled old one.   The envelope should be large enough to hold the passports but not too large or too small.   You should provide at least 16.20 NIS of postage.  If you are renewing several (more than three) passports together, you might want to take your application/s and passport/s to the post office and weigh them and then multiple the weight by two to determine the weight for the return postage (of the cancelled old and the new passports).  You will receive the old passports and the newly issued passports together, sent by registered mail.

Name change:  If you marry and want to change your name in your US passport, and you qualify for APPLICATION FOR US PASSPORT BY MAIL DS-82 you may include an official copy of your marriage certificate with your application to obtain a new passport in your new name.  This passport name change is not mandatory. 

Mailing:  Send the completed and signed APPLICATION BY US PASSPORT BY MAIL DS-82 with the pictures, the fee and the return envelope to:

Drop Off:  You may drop off the signed and completed application with the pictures fee and return envelope at the Citizen services/Passport Unit of the US Embassy at Hayarkon 71 Tel Aviv Mondays through Fridays between 8 and 11 a.m. except Israeli and US Holidays and the last Friday of each month.   

Name change:  If you marry, and want to change your name in your US passport, and you qualify for APPLICATION FOR US PASSPORT BY MAIL DS-82 you may include an official copy of your marriage certificate with your application to obtain a new passport in your new name.  This passport name change is not mandatory. 

The Embassy will process the application and return the new passport and the cancelled prior to you in two to three weeks.   Be sure to provide your email address and phone number on your application so we can contact you in case there are any problems.   While we will try to work with you, we reserve the right to return applications which do not comply to the above guidelines.  If you have any questions, mail us at AMCTelAviv@state.gov
